WVU is Dick Vitale’s team of the week, Andy Katz’s team of the week, and has cracked the Top 25 in both the AP and the Coach’s Poll. They’re 10-0, they have a win at home against George Washington, and road wins against NC State and LSU. That’s putting together a nice tournament resume.
It wasn’t that long ago that outgoing head coach Gale Catlett sold the program out by recruiting some guys that would fit in well with the Oakland Raiders, in the selfish hopes of having one more good season before he left. There were reports of locker room fights, guys throwing barstools at each other in a hot tub, and the team narrowly avoided NCAA sanctions.
They tried to hire Bob Huggins. It didn’t work out, and a little later, Bob was puking all over himself in his car. They tried to hire Dan Dakich of Bowling Green, but he pussed out when he saw the mess Catlett left. In steps John Belien, and a couple of years later, the program is one big family, filled with good guys and good players, and things are going their way. WVU was extremely fortunate that things worked out like they did, and that John Belien is on the sidelines.
