To the surprise of no one, the Dennis Erickson era has ended in San Francisco without getting much accomplished. 2 and 14… that’s not very good. But in fairness, the 49er players that Erickson’s had to work with have been less than spectacular. Vince Lombardi could maybe haved coach this team to 4 wins, while Kevin Gilbride, for example, would’ve been about -3 and 19. So maybe 2-14 isn’t so terrible.
That Ken Dorsey/Curtis Conway connection just never took off like everyone expected it to. Which brings us to the other guy who got fired, GM Terry Donahue. Tim Rattay/Dorsey, Kevan Barlow, Cedric Wilson, and Brandon Lloyd? Is that a joke? Show me a coach anywhere who thinks he can win with those skill players, and I’ll show you someone playing a WAC schedule. That 2-14 mark is on Donahue more than it is Erickson.
The good news for the 49ers is that the new coach and GM, whoever they happen to be, get the #1 overall draft pick to work with. The bad news is that there is no shortage of holes that need to be filled.
