No one expected him to coach for 20 more years, but right after year one of the comeback, he’s planning his exit? Why tell all of your players that you’re planning to bail soon, particularly if you don’t win a lot of games?
“My time in football will be short,” Gibbs said Tuesday. “If we don’t win more games next year, maybe real short.”
So, a basic translation would be… “If we don’t win, I’m going to quit.” That’s confidence-inspiring. Tremendous attitude for the leader to be displaying.
I have a feeling that this all turned out to be harder than he expected, and that he’s dying to get back into Nascar. The only reason he isn’t quitting right now is that he doesn’t want to be regarded as a total bitch. My guess is that he’s gone after this year, no matter what. If the Redskins do well, he’ll say he got them back on the right track, and it’s time to hand it off. If they suck, he’ll say he never had the players to succeed, and head back to a garage somewhere to eat deep-friend twinkies and listen to Toby Chesney records.
I think the real problem with the Redskins last year with Gibbs influence. Not only did he stick with Mark Brunell for way way way too long (probably the worst decision any coach made the entire year, and he did it for weeks in a row), but it’s hard to succeed when you’ll only allow your players to make left turns.
