Ever wonder how the Soviets reacted to the Miracle on Ice? Well…
Many of them threw away their silver medals, a defensemen threatened to murder the head coach on the flight home, and 121 empty vodka bottles were found when their Olympic quarters were cleaned. Even if they brought 30 players, and I doubt it was that many… that is a damn huge amount of vodka. Good Lord… Safe to say they did not enjoy their Lake Placid trip.
Wayne Coffey’s written a book about the entire thing, from both points of view. It sounds like a fascinating read.
Russian head coach Viktor Tikhonov says that pulling goalie Vladimir Tretiak was the worst move of his career. Y’know, I’d have to concur. Granted, this article is the entire extend of my knowledge of the career of Viktor Tikhonov, but it’s hard to imagine fucking up worse than that. I don’t think that one can be topped.
Quality read. Check it out.
