I find this hilarious. You may not.I don’t know why it works out like this, but I just can’t see this happening on any other team but the Portland Trailblazers. Starting point guard Sebastian Telfair has been fined by the team for carrying a loaded handgun onto the team’s private plane.

Telfair, apparently an aspiring Air Marshall, says the gun belongs to his girlfriend and that he inadvertently grabbed the wrong bag when leaving the house. Why his girlfriend is traveling with a heater in a pillowcase is unclear at the moment. The gun is registered in her name.

You might recall then-Dallas Cowboys head coach Barry Switzer being caught in an airport with a loaded handgun. Barry never got his onto the plane, but in his defense, I believe he was boarding a commercial flight, while Sebastian was getting onto the team’s private plane. Two entirely different situations… I just don’t want it to seem like I’m shortchanging Barry Switzer here. And by the way, the fact that Barry Switzer has a Super Bowl ring bothers me immensely.

In fairness to Marbury, a guy like Tayshaun Prince wouldn't look nearly as cool on the cover of NBA Ballers.248 NBA players voted. The two most underrated guys are Chauncey Billups (14% of the vote) and Elton Brand (12%). Chris Bosh got 5%, and then there’s a bunch of guys with 2 or 3%: Gilbert Arenas, Tayshaun Prince, Ricky Davis, Rashard Lewis, Earl Boykins, Josh Howard, and Tony Parker.

Top 3 most overrated: Stephon Marbury (12%), Yao Ming (10%), and Steve Francis (9%). Carmelo Anthony checks in with 5%, and after that, a bunch of guys with 3 or 4%: Tracy McGrady, Michael Olowokandi, Kobe Bryant, Paul Pierce, Kenyon Martin, and Jermaine O’Neal.

Interesting stuff… and this is the opinion of the guys who guard them every night, so agree or disagree, it carries some weight, especially in the cases of the guys who are getting around 10% of the vote.

That’s the only way to explain the fact that Isiah is trying to trade for Steve Francis. To Larry Brown, there’s only one thing worse than having a selfish shoot-first point guard… and that’s having two selfish score-first point guards.

We’re looking at a backcourt of Stephon Marbury, Steve Francis, and Jalen Rose. If you asked Larry Brown a year ago to design the least desirable starting backcourt that anyone could put together… and you might have gotten those three names. If the Knicks make any kind of a long-term commitment to Steve Francis, it’s hard to imagine Larry Brown wanting to come back next year, and I wouldn’t blame him.

In the short term, if you add a player like Francis to the Knicks line-up, they’ll become a little bit better. With two scorers like Marbury and Francis on the court, they’ll be harder to defend, and they might put up more points, but the ceiling is very low. You’re not going to establish any kind of an offense that moves the ball around, you’re not going to get everyone involved, you’re going to have defensive problems, you’re going to have guys fighting over the ball, and you’re going to have a coach trying to hang himself in the locker room with a pair of Eddy Curry’s shoelaces. That is not the blueprint for a winner.

Of course, this deal is kind of contingent on another deal which may or may not happen, one that probably deserves its own blog item… the near-fruition deal of Darko Milicic and Carlos Arroyo heading to Orlando for Kelvin Cato and a first-round pick. Ignoring the bigger picture of Darko’s legacy for a moment, this deal makes a lot of sense for a lot of teams.

In Carlos Arroyo, they get a very solid point guard who can score, but doesn’t necessarily need to. He’s a very good penetrator, he’ll play a little defense, and he can help a team. Darko Milicic is still young and big, if nothing else. I think he’s still worth taking a chance on if the price is right. The Magic have a lot of injuries and a lot of depth problems, and they could use the bodies. Darko Milicic, in my opinion, would be a great mentor for Dwight Howard… showing him how young players are supposed to play and act, etc.

The Pistons get Cato, a big man who (when healthy) can play defense and rebound, and they certainly need frontcourt depth more than they need backcourt depth right now, with Lindsay Hunter coming back from injury soon and Carlos Delfino giving them some quality minutes. Cato’s also got an $8.6 million contract that comes off the books this summer, giving the Pistons room to resign Ben Wallace and keep the starting five intact, and if Cato gives them anything at all on the court, they can likely resign him for the veterans minimum. Also, if you can get anything resembling a lottery pick in return for Darko Milicic… well, I think it’s time to cut your losses.

I didn’t hop off the Darko Milicic bandwagon until earlier this year when it became clear that the change from Larry Brown to Flip Saunders wasn’t going to do him a lot of good. I still believe he could be a good player… I am convinced that it’s 100% mental with him. For some reason, he has yet to shed the tentativeness and timidity that he’s carried with him since Day One. He’s got great teammates, teammates who like him, and he’s been through two coaches, and he never developed any kind of confidence. By now, it’s clear that that’s never going to happen in Detroit. I don’t know if it will happen anywhere else, either, but it’s at least worth trying.

I’ll be sad to see him go. If he does end up in Orlando, I’ll be rooting for him.

Hey, whaddaya know... Ryan Leaf is confused.I don’t think anyone could blame a West Texas A&M freshman quarterback next season if he got under center, heard a criticism from new QB coach Ryan Leaf, and then said to his new coach, “Why don’t you shut the fuck up, loser?”

Say this for West Texas A&M… they are risk takers. Hiring Ryan Leaf to coach your quarterbacks is a little like hiring Bill Romanowski to teach you about ethics and fairplay, or hiring Kyle Orton to teach you about proper beard maintenance. I suspect that more than once next year, a West Texas A&M QB will get under center and instead of calling a play, yell, “KNOCK IT OFF” like a little bitch.

But hey, you know… a lot of time has passed since Ryan Leaf was last in the NFL, and perhaps he’s matured to the point where he can now successfully educate a younger player. I mean, I doubt it… but I guess it’s possible. I mean, the man’s entire NFL legacy is immaturity. For his sake, I hope that’s changed… it’s just hard to picture. Best of luck, West Texas A&M.

Sadly, we must wait until August 4th.With many thanks to Mister Irrelevant… here’s a movie trailer that you should check out. It’s for a movie where will Ferrell plays a NASCAR driver who has children named “Walker” and “Texas, Ranger.” That alone should be enough to make you want to see this movie.

It also stars John C. Reilly, Sacha Baron Cohen, Michael Clarke Duncan, David Koechner, and Chris Parnell. I don’t think I could be more excited about a movie if they announced that a fourth Godfather was in the works.

This is a man who understands how to properly use profanity. This AP article is all about how the ESPN reality series “Knight School” will featured the “bleeping out” of some profanity. Well, that certainly comes as a surprise. I didn’t know that Bob Knight used any kind of dirty language.

To tell you the truth, I’m really looking forward to the series… which probably means I’ll end up being let down, since it’s ESPN and all. But, as a teacher/basketball coach, I’ve really come to respect Bob Knight, as much as anyone else out there. And that’s a fairly recent development for me; that wasn’t always the case. But you just can’t argue with the way he teaches the game, the way he wins, the way he takes no shortcuts along the way. As a basketball coach, there’s never been anyone better. Granted, there are a few other issues when you’re talking about Bob Knight… but that’s a whole other conversation.

Of course, with the show, we won’t be getting the full Bob Knight experience… because 1) it’s a TV show, and 2) he’s probably not going to be as hard on a bunch of walk-ons as he’s going to be on his actual players. Still, I’m pretty excited about it.

Also, while we’re here… it was a little bit unfortunate what Bob Knight did to Dana Jacobsen yesterday… kinda funny, sure, but… not very nice. If you missed it, Dana Jacobsen was interviewing Coach Knight on Cold Pizza, and she asked him about Mike Davis’s comments that Indiana needed one of their own to be their coach. Knight interrupted her and said, “I have no interest in talking about Indiana.” She asked again. He took his earpiece out, stood up, and left.

Probably not the most professional way to handle things, but… if you’re Dana Jacobsen, I mean… you had to see that coming. You asked once, and he said quite emphatically that he wasn’t going to talk about it. Considering that it’s Bob Knight… you’ve got to assume a little bit of risk when you decide to ask it a second time. Sorry, Dana.
