Doc had a choice. Go to prison for one year… or just go to rehab, but if you slip and test positive for cocaine again, you do five years.
Doc Gooden chose prison, and that’s about the saddest thing I’ve ever heard. That is a man who feels truly powerless over his addiction, and has no faith in his ability to beat it. That just breaks my heart.
There really isn’t a lot to say about it, other than it’s just sad as fuck. I hope he has a friendly cellmate. I hope his soap is easy to grip and difficult to drop. I hope he finds some strength and some help in dealing with this thing. Have a good stretch, Doc.

The Big Picutre
at least it ain’t a turkish prison…i agree full-heartedly with your soap comment, mjd.
we’re behind you, doc. (so may be a dude named Butch).

Because it’s so hard to get drugs when in jail. Maybe he knows that’s where the really good stuff is.

Jesus Christ does Doc Gooden make me sad. One of the more depressing stories in the history of sports.

To echo Doug, maybe he just wants to spend 5 years in the can doing all the drugs he ever wanted to. Bodog.com now has opening lines on how long it’ll take him to fail the first piss test.

I really hate to agree with S.A.SMTIH! on anything (or even to implicitly admit that I watch his show), but tonight he brought up the idea that if Doc is so powerless over his drug addiction that he would rather go to jail for a year than take the chance of breaking and going for five…is jail really the answer. I know all the stuff about don’t do the crime if you cant do the time, but jail is supposed to be about rehabilitation, and that’s clearly not going to be the case here.

You mean sending drug users to jail isn’t the answer?! Holy crap, you gotta be kidding me! We better be careful and all shut our brains off for a little while or else we might be in danger of actually make some PROGRESS in our society.

Unsilent Majority
sending a guy with a serious cocaine addiction to federal prison for a year is just inviting further problems to develop. he needs help, not lockdown.

Good heavens…I hope this man gets the help he needs and deserves. If I had a choice between going to rehab or prison, I’d go to rehab. No doubt about it.

Prison is a great place to go to get away from drugs, and I’m a 6’8″ Tongan warrior. Doc’ll have plenty of time to work on that curveball.
I’m sure he’ll get plenty of visits from his nephew Gaaaary. Watch that prison food Doc. Lot’s of starch.

maybe he is joining a gang and is getting “jumped” in by doing a stint.
