Delmon Young, outfielder for the Durham Bulls, has an interesting method of expressing disagreement with the calls of the umpire. Some guys argue, scream, kick a little dirt… some have even been known to spit. Delmon Young throws his bat and hits the ump in the chest with it.
This is probably against some kind of rule, and is not exactly a ringing endorsement of the replacement umps that they’ve been using in the minors while the regular guys are on strike. I wonder how much that had to do with Young’s reaction… like fucking with a substitute teacher, as opposed to your regular every day teacher. This never would’ve happened if the Durham Bulls were able to keep Crash Davis around. Anyway, he’ll probably be slapped with a suspension longer than any major leaguer will ever get for steroid use. I’ll guess 30 games.
Young, 20, is stud a prospect in the Devil Rays organization, and was probably going to called up sooner or later. He was #1 on MLB.com’s prospect list. I think this might make his stay in the minors a bit more lengthy.
I’d love to see video of this, assuming the umpire is okay. They wear chest protectors, right? I’d just like to know how hard he threw it, what kind of a throw it was… If anyone should stumble across it somewhere, please feel free to share in the comments.

I swear, there is something in the water either in the Eno River or in Falls Lake. Either that or the entirety of Durham County is built on one giant Indian burial ground.

I think it’s funny this incident involved Pawtucket — the team involved with the best charging of the mound ever when Pawtucket’s Izzy Alcantra drop kicked the catcher and charged the mound.
I’m sure you’ve all seen it, but here’s a link to the video. http://www.dmsjr.com/couchmedia/izzyfight.mpg

according to reports it was not a throw instead it’s being described as a “flip of the bat”.
If Young gets a 30 game suspension in the minor leagues could he then get called up to the majors and play immediately? cause that would be cool.

I think it’s actually the combination of the car dealership and prison across the street from the stadium.

I don’t think they would let him play in the majors for the duration of the suspension.

UM HOLY SHIT. JUST saw the video on espn baseball tonight. the bat, whether throw underhand or not, DEFINITELY FLEW AT THE UMPIRE. it was not a single flip. young walked OUT of the frame, and the ump was standing there, all of sudden the bat comes flying out of nowhere and hitting the ump. SHIT! some underhand throw!

Grade A prick move. Pretty much indefensible. Of course, that won’t stop someone from defending him. Hell, he even profusely apologized tonight.
Buster Olney said that an MLB official said if it happened in a big league game, it would be 60 games, without blinking. I bet Delmon gets something like that for sure.

Let’s compare…
30 games suspension for the black guy who assaults an ump. (an ump who over-reacted in tossing Young, thus trigging the assault)
13 games for the white guy who attacks several news and camera men hours before a game. (Kenny Rogers).
Some thing is is not right here. If Young gets 30, the asre-wipe Rogers should get 30.
