Bud Selig and Major League Baseball are not planning any kind of celebration of recognition of Barry Bonds’ upcoming 715th home run. Barry says that’s fine… and I believe him when he says that.
But still, Babe Ruth’s 715, though not the record, is a hallowed number in baseball… and there’s no way that Barry Bonds isn’t going to enjoy passing that number. Major League Baseball might not celebrate, but Barry’s going home, popping a bottle of champagne, and reciting a few verses of the oh-so catchy “Kill the White People.” I’m going to be singing that all day.
And just for the record, I’m alright with MLB not celebrating 715. It is, after all, not the record. But I think it would be the right thing for the Giants to do something. If it happens on the road, just announce it in the stadium, let the people boo, give Barry a commemorative bronze ass-needle or something, whatever.
But when he gets home, there should be some kind of a ceremony, from the Giants organization. They owe it to their players to support their accomplishments… and even if this isn’t the record, it is kind of a big deal.

Insomniac
I’ve been to enough games at PacBell/SBC/ATT stadium to know that you don’t have to worry about the Giants overlooking Bonds when he passes Ruth. Before the game, the fans will probably start a communion line where they can all personally fellate Bonds to show their gratitude.

And what would be wrong with that…
Go Barry.

It doesn’t matter what MLB or what the Giants do at home or how much you dislike the guy. I have a hunch that wherever Barry hits his 715th, whoever is in the house will give that man a lengthy ovation either way, especially at that stadium in San Francisco.

Ruth’s total is 714, not 715.

That’s right. And if I understand correctly, 715 will be the record-breaking homerun?

Tecnically…no MJD. The record-breaker would be 756. (sorry)
Hey I haven’t been able to stop singing “Kill the White People” all morning. Thanks.

When Bonds hit 715, it will give him the record for the most career home runs by a left-handed hitter, but 755 is still the major league record for home runs. So, I suppose, there is some sort of significance to 714 beyond it just being second-best. I guess if an NL player hits in 45 straight games, there would be some significance, but 45 ain’t 57.
The trohpy for second-place is in the ladies’ room.

I’m not so sure Barry will get much of an ovation on the road. In fact, the best thing that could happen would be for the stadium to completely ignore him when it happens.

Jesus. I just read the story you linked. What a prick. I hope the ball gets thrown back on the field and everybody walks out when he hits 715.
