The Sacramento Kings aren’t going to renew his contract, and that’ll be it for the Adelman era in Sactown. Here’s how president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie described it:
“I came to the conclusion that continuing this way just wasn’t feasible. The dynamic that needed to be there to help it move forward just wasn’t there.”
Translation: “This move was not made for any sort of basketball reasons. There are people here, and I’m not going to say who, but they own casinos, that didn’t like Rick Adelman. So he’s gone.”
If they want to fire him, that’s fine… I just think the timing is a little weird. Things were back on an upswing. If they wanted to fire him after they got to the Conference Finals, and just couldn’t push through, that would’ve been understandable. Maybe he wasn’t the guy to get you there. But now, at this point… why?
Who expected anything out of the Kings this year? You’ve got a situation where you just traded for a great player, who happens to be a little volatile, and he gets along with the coach. So well did they get along, in fact, that they were just able to push the defending champions to six games, in a year where no one even thought they’d sniff the playoffs.
Bottom line… the Maloofs wanted him gone, and he’s gone. There’s a rumor circulating that the Kings want to hire Don Nelson… which, if true, means that the Maloffs are either 1) looking for a drinking buddy, or 2) just not paying attention to anything at all that has happened in the NBA or the world over the past two or three years.

At this point, you’re right, it doesn’t make sense.
Unless the decission had already been made by flirting with dr. phil in the off-season.
(who wouldn’t feel disrespected {coach Adelman} with his NBA-winning record to have to take not getting the credit he felt he deserved for the uncertainty of the player rotation he was dealing with? To say nothing about taking it on the upswing!).
Taking a chance here; we all know the Maloofs are gamblers but P.J. Carlesimo? On his good behaviour in San Antoine, it could be a success story like RonRon this year…
(Or the beginning of something else entirely)….
& Stan Van Gundy? A red-headed-2nd-cousin-twice-removed?(no knock on my 2nd cousins, but)……..
I’ll throw up my coaching choices:
1)Geoff Petrie himself. Why not?Be a 1st.
2)Hubie Blake.Imagine the press conferences.
3)Eddie Jordan. Petrie didn’t want him to leave Sac as an assistant coach to go to the Wiz. Bring him back!
4)Well, of course we can trot out Rudy T., but he doesn’t give a flyin’ frigg.
5)A dark horse; Bill Walton. I don’t know why I like this, but what the heck.
6)My fav dark horse, coach Thomason from the University of the Pacific.A rebounding mutha zen-master inspirer despite all that blah-blah-that college coaches “don’t have what it takes to make it in the NBA”. sure. Larry Brown, anyone?

I don’t think it was smart or right that the Kings fired Rick Adelman. I’m not the only one:
YAY Sports: This move is pretty…

[...] The Kings show Rick Adelman the door because … well, we’re not exactly sure (and neither are fans); the early clubhouse leader for the gig is Don Nelson. He couldn’t coach Chris Webber, but he’ll be able to handle Ron Artest? Um, no. (Mighty MJD, Channel 13) [...]

Not sure why they’d fire him now. If they’d wanted to fire him, they should have done it back when he kept blowing important playoff games against the Lakers despite having the best team in the league.

they fired him because they are smart. they know how to make money, and basketball is a business for the maloofs, they act like the are excited and bullshit, but they wanna get the more than the bang for their buck just like they traded chris webber, and dough christie.
