The NFL is getting to be like the NBA, wit all these off-season trades. A 3-way deal went down last night, as the Redskins got a good running back, the Broncos got an undisclosed draft pick, and the Falcons got another bad wide receiver for Michael Vick to overthrow.

For the Redskins, this trade is one of two things: 1) A complete panic move. Or 2) An indication that Clinton Portis’s injury is a little more severe than previously thought. I’d lean towards #2, but you know, this is Dan Snyder purchaser of all objects bright and shiny. But hey, Duckett’s an excellent runner, and it can never hurt to have another one of those on your roster. His name is also a good one to have around if you like writing “There once was a man from Nantucket” limericks.

As for the Falcons, they get… well, something. Ashley Lelie is fast, and he is among the best in the league at running down the sideline in a straight line without the football. As far as getting open or actually catching the football… well, average at best. It seems like they should have gotten more out of a guy who’s capable of being someone’s #1 running back. He may catch some deep balls here and there, but if Ashley Lelie accomplishes anything noteworthy over a sustained period of time it Atlanta, I’ll be shocked.

As for the Broncos, they get an additional draft pick, and since it came from the Redskins, let’s just go ahead and assume it’s a higher draft pick than they deserved to get for Ashley Lelie, a guy they were never going to miss anyway. It’s hard to lose on a deal where you don’t give up anything.

It took almost two months for the following completely predictable things to happen:

1) Al Harrington is again an Indiana Pacer. I went to the trouble of photoshopping what he might look like in a Pacer uniform for you. I think I did a pretty good job.
2) The Atlanta Hawks outright refused to help their franchise.

The Hawks got a first round pick in exchange for Harrington, as well as “cap flexibility.” I’d like to call your attention to the fact that the Hawks have been leading the league in “cap flexibility” for quite some time now, and have almost nothing to show for it. Sure, they have some young talent on the roster, but it has not translated into wins. In fact, it has not translated into anything other than the Atlanta Hawks being an embarrassingly poorly run franchise.

That is what took two months? It’s like the guy in your fantasy draft who takes 10 minutes to make his 5th round selection, then takes a deep breath, smiles a knowing smile and says, “I’ll take Ron Dayne.” If it’s going to take that long to do something, you should at least go to the trouble of doing it right.

A first round pick, that probably going to be in the 20-25 range, that the Hawks are almost certainly going to fuck up anyway. Real smooth, guys. Excellent job in refusing to acquire any talent in return for a talented player.
