I know I’m absurdly late on this, but I wanted to mention that I really liked something Steve Spurrier said after South Carolina’s near-loss to Auburn. The Cock fans were applauding the team as they left the field.

“Please don’t clap when we come close. I don’t know if any coach has told our fans, ‘Please don’t clap if we get beat.”

Well, someone had to be the first, and I think it’s a worthwhile message. Drilling a winning mentality into a team is not easy. If a team gets comfortable with losing… it can be nearly impossible to change the attitude surrounding the team. Ask Temple. And if Steve Spurrier feels like his fans are tolerating an atmosphere of losing by applauding a loss, then he should say so. I think he’s absolutely right. The message is, “Do not be content with being a fucking loser, and don’t you people let them feel like it is okay.” Or maybe the message was, “Lou Holtz was a fucking pussy. I am not.” I think it was one of those two.

I bet Spurrier was actually legitimately confused by the fans reaction when he heard it. Think about it… when’s the last time someone applauded him when he lost? It didn’t happen at Florida, and it damn sure didn’t happen with the Redskins. In fact, I don’t think anyone applauded him for anything he did when he was in Washington. He probably started looking around the field for a streaker or a fistfight or something that might be drawing some applause.

  • The Ol’ Ball Coach deserves the prais for that. He expects his team to beat and compete with the best, and he will accept nothing less. That’s the way it should be. Kudos, Spurrier.

Does South Carolina normally clap after the end of a game? At Nebraska its a tradition to clap and show respect for the opposing team after every game, win or lose. Just wondering if anyone knows.

  • The way his team played they deserved the respect the crowd showed to them. It was a great game and they played hard. I think its ridiculous to sya we only deserve respect if we win.

Now if they hadnt played hard or dogged it I would agree but that isnt the case. I certainly dont want my kid getting the message that the only time you have any merit is if you win. Everyone wants to win but its a fact that 50% of the teams that play lose.

Spurrier is a large ego in a small pond.

James, you are a fucking idiot.

I hate to say this, but Spurrier is damn dear the perfect college coach. Fuck Florida, Duke, and fuck SC, but I have to respect his work.

You can’t have kids at the top of the SEC feeling like it’s ok to lose. Ever. I don’t care if they’ve been eating the shit of the SEC for the past 40 years– you damn sure can’t get them to like eating that shit and use the same crew to climb out of the fucking sewer.

So, yes the crowd was doing the polite Southern thing (which I fucking love) and supporting SS & his Cocks, but really– fuck losing. Losing is for Vandy.

  • Applauding a great effort by a bunch of kids who havent historically given one is not the same as feeling its okay to loose. Nobody likes to loose.

I applaud any team that gives a great effort win or lose. They made half the game you sat and watched whether your team won or not.

And again as I said losing is statistically for half the teasm that play every week. People who dont applaud a great but losing effort by their team to me are the fucking idiots. I am reminded of spoiled Maimi fans who are cane crazy till they hit a slump and then they simply fucking lose it. Fire cooker, bench this damned kid. Grow up already. Anyone remember its a game?

They are the same kind of guys who run onto a field to tackle a JV player for some percieved offense or maybe just to help their team win.

Grow the fuck up you mental midget.

    Yes, James you idiot savant…

Yes you applaud your team’s effort, and you certainly keep the coinflip assfuck stat reality of half the teams losing half the time in the back of your head…

But you never, ever as a coach let your kids (be they 16 year olds or 20 year olds) get the idea that this game is one they can just pick up and set down at their will. These little people are little unformed humans, and it is your accepted job as a coach to help form them.

So, yes I hate Spurrier. But I respect what he’s trying to do to mold his young team.

*smacks James in the face with his cock*

  • I see Spurrier’s point here. To me though, it just seems more like the fans saying ‘hey, good fight, we still support you.’ But I dunno. Spurrier could have just explained the meaning of life in 5 words and I’d still want to punch his smarmy ass in the throat.
